Candidiasis Causes and Treatments

The human body is naturally a host to many kinds of microorganisms, including fungus and bacteria. Some fungi and bacteria are helpful for the body, others have no negatives or benefits, and still others will lead to harmful infections.

A fungal infection is due to fungi living in the nails, skin, and hair. In the condition candidiasis, skin becomes infected with the candida fungi. This is a very common ailment. Infection can happen in most parts of the body’s exposed skin. However, it is most likely to happen in a warm and damp environment. In addition, these fungi like the dark, so they often occur in skin folds or creases, like the armpits and genital area. The fungus responsible for candidiasis is called candida albicans.

Candida is the leading cause of diaper rash in babies. This fungus benefits from the warm, damp, dark environment found in the baby’s diaper. Candidiasis is extremely common in individuals who have diabetes and in obese people. Antibiotics and contraceptives such as birth control pills will increase anyone’s risk of developing candidiasis. Candida may also trigger nail infections and infections in the corners of the mouth.

Oral thrush is a candida infection that occurs in the mouth, and is often associated with antibiotic use. Candida infections are not generally contagious, though sometimes people with weakened immune systems can easily catch the infection.

Candida is the most common cause of vaginal yeast infections. These are very common and often associated with the use of antibiotics.

Symptoms of candidiasis include itching, rashes, skin lesions, infected hair follicles that resemble pimples, and red or inflamed skin.

Candidiasis is diagnosed mainly by skin appearance. Sometimes a sample is taken and the culture reveals yeast forms, which indicate a candida infection.

Good hygiene is important to fully get rid of candidiasis. Maintaining clean, dry skin, that is allowed to breathe is very helpful. Weight loss can eliminate many problems in obese people. Diabetics can benefit from practicing sugar control.

Candidiasis is generally easily treatable, though repeat infections are common if the root cause is not taken care of. Topical antifungal medications are generally used to treat skin infections. An oral antifungal medication may be necessary for infection of the nails or in cases of severe candida involving the throat, mouth, or vagina. If you think you may have symptoms of candidiasis you should schedule an appointment with your doctor for proper diagnosis.

Maintaining overall good hygiene and health can help you to avoid candida infections. Be sure to keep your skin clean and dry. Using a drying powder could help to prevent a fungal infection in those who are easily susceptible. Weight loss and practicing sugar control in obese and diabetic individuals can help eliminate candidiasis infections.
